You are probably wondering what red and purple triangles have to do with anything. Well today, they are pretty significant to me as I am sitting here writing this post. I got a horrible migraine while at work today and for the first time in a long time, I didn’t get an aura in enough time to take something to ward off the worst of the pain. I was sitting there at work, creating a flow chart for a database I am helping my boss create and next thing I knew, in my field of vision, I had red and purple triangles dancing before my eyes in a circle. No, they didn’t have feet and they weren’t doing the electric slide or anything. But they were making it difficult to see and when they happen, they usually make me worthless for accomplishing anything while I have the aura since I can’t see much around them.
So I sat there for about 10 minutes, hoping they would clear away enough for me to go get some pain meds out of my purse and to go grab a coffee or some other source of caffeine to help keep the worst of it at bay. Usually, when I get an aura, they last for several hours, and I have more than enough time to take something to keep away the evil migraine monster. But not this time—after that 10 minutes or so, I decide to forget waiting, because I already feel the pain and nausea creeping up. I walked through the warehouse, barely able to see, hoping that I didn’t get ran over by someone driving a forklift or dragging a pallet around on a pallet jack and went to go get medicine to take. In the 5 minutes or so it took me to walk from my computer to my locker, I was in so much pain that I was fighting to not burst out in tears. My stomach was rolling and my head felt as if I had someone jackhammering through my skull.
I finally got some meds in me, and went back to work. After a while, the meds started working enough that I was able to make it through the rest of the day and actually accomplish something while I was at it. The nausea was still there, along with what was now a somewhat dulled ache inside my skull. I would have to say that this migraine was probably one of the worst I’ve had in the past 3 years. Bad enough that I almost stopped by an emergency room or urgent care after work. Once the meds started working I dulled to about a 6 or 7 on the pain scale, but before that was pushing a 10. That is enough to send anyone seeking some help. Since I live in the Twin Cities, traffic is horrible in the afternoon, so I didn’t want to deal with the worst of the rush hour traffic. This led me to the decision to just suffer through it so I could get home, do my homework and make my blog posts.
Being productive on a difficult day such as today is hard enough. (It is my dad’s 58th birthday and we lost him almost 14 years ago.) But couple that with dancing triangles and some of the worst pain imaginable, and all I wanted to do was curl up in a ball and not wake up for 24 hours.
