I am a fan of long lasting foundations. Being a busy woman, I don’t really have the time to constantly check the state of my makeup and whether or not it needs refreshing. Long wearing foundations are one of the answers to such a problem. For those days that you are busy with work, errands and other responsibilities, long wearing foundations can make life a little more easy for you.
The first exposure I had to a long wearing foundation was with Revlon‘s Colorstay liquid foundation. For me, this is the gold standard by which all others are measured. It comes in two formulations which is ideal. Those with normal to dry skin can select a formulation suited for their skin type and those who have oily or combination skin (such as myself) can select a formula that is suited for their skin type. The great thing about this is that the oily skin formula doesn’t break down like most other foundations tend to do.
So now onto Avon’s answer to long wear foundations. Extra Lasting is a great formula. It sports an SPF of 12, a glass bottle with pump and a decent price tag. All of these are factors when selecting a foundation. I truly believe that there are two cosmetic items you shouldn’t scrimp on: your skin care products and your foundation. Just about anything else can be made to look fantastic with the right techniques or tools. But if you go cheap on foundation, people can tell.
I have been using Extra Lasting for a while now, (the bottle is nearly gone). One thing I instantly disliked about it was the fact it only comes in one formulation. Not all skin types are created equal and companies that make foundations need to realize this. For someone with oily skin, this foundation breaks down fairly quickly. After only a few hours, I notice the color starting to change as the oils from my skin break down the pigments and begin to change their color. My face gets shiny more quickly and all in all, I feel as if it doesn’t provide the coverage and long wear that I would of expected from it.
The pro’s of the product is the pump. I hate unsanitary practices and having foundation that isn’t in a pump bottle drives me NUTS! To the point that when I use Colorstay from Revlon, I have a bottle from an old foundation that I clean and sterilize and transfer my foundation into it. Keeping your makeup sterile reduces breakouts, helps it to last a little longer and all in all, gives you a better sense of peace about what you are putting onto your skin.
I also like the fact that the product has SPF in it. SPF is a must to keep your skin youthful and protected from the damaging UV rays of the sun. I do use a moisturizer with SPF in it but I have more peace of mind when using a foundation that also includes it.
All in all, Extra Lasting doesn’t really fit my needs. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t a good product. For those with dry to normal skin who want a medium coverage foundation that will last a while, it should be an excellent choice. But for those who are plagued with an oil field for a face like I am, it simply breaks down to quickly to be considered long wearing or a top contender in the foundation department. For now, I’ll stick with my Revlon Colorstay.
