Review: Avon Mosaic Effects Crackle Polish

As many of you know, crackle polish top coats have been a huge craze these days.  Gaining inspiration from the crackle coats used to create distressed looking furniture, someone out there got the wonderful idea that such a look would be great for the nails too.  At first I wasn’t a huge fan of this fad but after seeing it pop up time and time again, I began to see it for its true potential.  Continue reading for my review of this polish available from Avon and my thoughts regarding some ideas for this fad.

Avon Mosaic Effects Crackle Top Coat

I haven’t tried many of the varieties of crackle polish that are available.  So while my experience is limited to the Sally Hansen formula and Avon, I still want to share my views regarding the product.   First of all, I think that this polish is perfect for the price.  I paid twice what the Avon costs for my Sally Hansen crackle in Fuchsia Shock and was extremely disappointed in it.  Shaking each of the bottles, one can instantly tell that the Avon formulation is more fluid and is thinner in nature.  The Sally Hansen formula is to quick drying to be an effective polish.  Because of this, it gunks up on the brush and you’re lucky if you can apply a nice thin layer of the product.

As with any crackle polish, the thicker the layer, the less crackle you’ll experience.  The image above is the result of putting on a thin even coat.  Applying to completely dry polish is key in getting the crackle to work properly.  I would almost suggest polishing your nails with your favorite color or the color you want underneath the crackle and then waiting until the next day to apply the crackle.  This way you know your nail color is completely dry.  It dries with a satin finish, and you can get a wonderful high gloss with a top coat once the polish has dried.   I definitely recommend a top coat of some sort because otherwise, the crackle has the tendency to chip off a little.

I tried the polish over a few different colors.  When applied over two coats of 9.0.2.1.Orange from Wet and Wild’s Fastdry line, I got a great nail look for Halloween.  The orange base with the black over it was a great look.

Right now, I am sporting the crackle over Sinful Colors polish called What’s Your Name.  It is a jelly polish that is full of duo-chromatic micro-glitter that is blue or purple depending on where the light is hitting it.   After waiting about 4 hours to make sure my polish was completely dry (including a layer of top coat), I applied a thin coat of the crackle.  Once it was done doing its thing and drying, I applied two more coats of top coat for a good seal and that wonderful shine that I love for most of my polishes to have.  I have to say the effect was great.  Since the Sinful Colors polish is a black base, it was a subtle but great effect. I don’t have my digital camera unfortunately otherwise I’d take a shot of the color to show it off to you.

All in all, I give the product an A.  It has my vote and will remain part of my collection.  It has also convinced me to try some of the other more expensive brands such as O.P.I.

Until Next Time,

Sarah

  1. I wasn’t a huge fan of the crackle look for nails at first either, but it has really grown on me. I love OPI, it’s one of the only brands I will use. In any type of polish whether a single color, metallic, glitter or top and bottom coats, I have never been disappointed.
I have seen the crackle applied over polish done as a rainbow across the nail and on camo nails, both looked neat. Have you tried applying the crackle from side to side on the nail instead on bottom to top? A little more work and a little harder to do, but it is different than what everyone else is wearing!
